Movie Theater

Today I would like to write about the differences in movie theaters in Japan and the United States. I recently went to the movie theater to see the second movie of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. I really recommend this movie by the way!

While I was at the theater, I noticed some differences. These are things I have always been curious about since coming to Japan. The first thing is the food. In the United States, usually movie theater food does not smell strongly. However, in Japan you can get hot dogs or pizza. I thought this was a little strange at first. Most people in the US eat popcorn or candy in the movie theater. The second thing I noticed is something actually I really like in Japan. This is that no one checks their phone during a movie. In the US, occasionally someone will check their phone during a movie. This is very annoying and also it is a distraction from the movie.

The next thing I noticed is that Japanese people tend to be pretty quiet during a movie. Americans aren't super loud, but when something is funny, everyone laughs loudly and things like that. The biggest difference is that at the end of the movie, a lot of Japanese people wait until the very end of the credits to leave. In the United States, almost everyone runs out of the theater as soon as the credits begin. The only time people stay is if they think there will be an extra scene at the end of the credits. I always get very antsy at the end of movies. I like to leave right away, but in Japan I always wait because I don’t want to be rude.

Have you ever been to a movie theater in another country? Was it different from Japan? Let me know!
