Nikko

Today I would like to write about my recent travels. I went to Nikko last weekend and I wanted to tell you guys about it! I went to 6 places in Nikko; the Shinkyo Bridge, Toshogu, Narabijizo, Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and Irohazaka. I went with my friend. We decided to take the train there. We didn’t take the expensive train, so it took me 3 hours from my home to arrive in Nikko. Once we got there, it was much colder than Tokyo.

Our first stop was the Shinkyo Bridge. It is a red bridge near Toshogu. If you walk to the end of the bridge you are supposed to get good luck. You have to pay 300 yen to walk on it though. My friend and I paid and walked to the end of the bridge and made a wish.

Our next stop was Toshogu. It was really interesting. Since it is so big, it took a couple of hours to see everything we wanted to see. We walked up 200 steps to Tokugawa Ieyasu’s grave. When we arrived at the top, there was a Buddhist priest there. He had a stick with many white papers on it. He said he was going to do a blessing. It was the only blessing he would do all day, so we were really lucky that we were able to be blessed. Everyone bowed while the priest said a prayer and held his stick above the group. It was a very interesting experience for me.

Next we went to Narabijizo. This was my favorite place in Nikko. There were no people there. We also climbed down the rocks to sit by the water. There were a couple of small waterfalls and it was very beautiful. There were also many jizo statues. It was a very peaceful and calm place.

The last places were Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and Irohazaka. When we went up the mountain it was extremely cold! We looked at the waterfall and there was ice around it. Then we sat by the lake for a little bit. The sun was setting so it was very beautiful. We went down Irohazaka by bus. The scenery was really beautiful but it was a little scary to ride a bus on such a narrow and winding road.
