Fireworks

Today I would like to talk about my favorite summer event; fireworks. Recently there have been so many firework festivals all over Japan. I’m always surprised at how crowded these events are. I think this is because where I’m from, people usually set off fireworks individually. There are of course, events that are held by cities and companies that are more crowded, but since many people set fireworks off from their homes, those events don’t get as crowded as the events I’ve seen around Tokyo.

Recently, I went to a firework festival in Yokohama. It was really interesting. However, we had to get there 2 hours early to get a nice seat. We didn’t sit in the main area, but we sat across the river from the main area. Even though we were far from the main area, by the time the festival started, there were hundreds and hundreds of people around us.

The fireworks in Japan are very elaborate, which is really nice to look at. I love seeing the different shapes and everything. We have some fireworks like this in the US, but we only usually see them if we go somewhere like Disneyland. I really love the atmosphere of wearing things like yukata and having little booths with games and food. It’s something that makes me really want to go every year. The only thing I could do without is the crowds. For someone who is from a town of only 2,000 people, these big-scale events are a little much for me sometimes.

I occasionally miss fireworks in my hometown in the countryside. We would go to my grandpa’s house and have a big bbq outdoors with hamburgers and hotdogs, gather the whole family, and shoot off a bunch of fireworks that each individual family would bring. The kids also played with sparklers. It was always a really nice time.

Overall, I think fireworks are great wherever you watch them! They are one of my favorite parts of summer!
