Illuminations

Today I want to talk about illuminations. Illuminations are a big part of the Christmas season in both Japan and the U.S. However, the style of illuminations is a little bit different. In Japan, illuminations tend to be very public and a tourist attraction. However, in the U.S, many of the illuminations are done on your own house.

In Tokyo alone, there are so many illuminations to go to. I have already been to Shibuya, Omotesando, Marunouchi, Roppongi Hills, and some others. I have also visited Yokohama’s Christmas market and seen the fireworks and illumination in Odaiba. There are so many Christmas-themed areas in the area that it is hard to choose which one to go and see. The theme with all of these illuminations is that they are all done so that people can visit them and take pictures of them. However, I rarely see houses in Tokyo decorated with Christmas lights. This makes me a little sad. I really love Christmas season and one of the reasons I love it is because of all the Christmas lights.

In the U.S, Christmas lights are put up by families. Usually it is done at the end of November or the beginning of December. Each family tries to make their house look great. Some towns even have competitions to see who made the best display. This was always very fun for me. One year, my family won an award for best house! It was really exciting.

In the end, the point of illuminations in Japan and the U.S is the same. They are to be enjoyed by everyone during the Christmas holidays. Have you seen any good illuminations this year? If you have, please tell me about them!

Below are some pictures of some of the places I have been this Christmas. All photos were taken by me!
