クリスマスツリー

Christmas decorations

December is finally here! To celebrate this month I will be trying to make Christmas and winter-themed blogs all month. Today, I would like to start by talking about some different Christmas traditions we have in the United States.

The first tradition is buying a Christmas tree and decorating the outside of your house (and sometimes the inside) with lights. Most families who celebrate Christmas in the U.S either buy a real tree every year or have a big fake tree that they can reuse every year. My family has a fake tree because it is easier and not as much of a mess. Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, my family puts up the tree and decorates it with ornaments, tinsel, and lights. Usually my mother is in charge of this. My father starts to decorate the outside of the house because he has to climb ladders and nail lights to the house. The children help both inside and outside. My mother always plays Christmas music in the house and lights Christmas candles when she is decorating the tree.

Another western tradition is mistletoe. This is a plant that we hang above doors during Christmas. If two people stand under the mistletoe together, they have to kiss. This is a cute tradition in my opinion. Usually mistletoe is hung at parties or in public places. It’s a good icebreaker for the holiday season.

One last tradition is that during Christmas, we send Christmas cards to everyone we know to wish them a Merry Christmas. This is similar to Japan during New Year’s I think. In my family, my mother hangs all of the cards we get from family and friends on the inside of the front door or on the banister of the stairs.

These are just some of the Christmas traditions that we have. Are there any special Christmas traditions in Japan? Let me know!
