Countryside vs City

田舎と都市

Today I would like to talk about living in the city and living in the countryside. There are many pros and cons for each. I grew up in the countryside but I have been living in big cities for the past 3 years. For me, both the countryside and the city are good places, but they have different atmospheres.

I’ll start with the countryside. When I was young, I lived in the countryside. The image of countryside in the U.S and in Japan is very different. People say small cities are the countryside in Japan. In the U.S, those places are still considered cities. For example, people say places outside of Tokyo are “countryside”. Many of my friends say that the station where I live on the Seibu Shinjuku line is the “countryside”. However, there are no trees or fields. There are only apartments, houses, and a Seiyu. In the U.S, if you say “countryside”, it really means the countryside. There are lots of fields and nature.

In my hometown, there is no shopping center, no movie theater, and no restaurants. There is only a small grocery store and gas station. If I wanted to go see a movie when I was younger, I had to drive a little over an hour to get to the theater. The same goes for shopping malls. The closest restaurant was about 20 minutes away. When I was younger, I really hated living in the countryside. However, there were many things I didn’t appreciate. For example, in the summer in southern Indiana you can see shooting stars almost every night. Also, there are thousands of fireflies in the fields. It’s really beautiful. It is very peaceful in the countryside and the scenery is really nice.

Living in the city is very different. Everything is so close, and there is a lot of public transportation. When I lived in the countryside, there were no trains, buses, or taxis. It’s so convenient living in Tokyo. It’s also exciting. You can do whatever you want and it doesn’t take too much time to get there. Many people from small towns dream of living in huge cities like Tokyo, and I was the same. I always wanted to leave my town and have an adventure in the city. However, now I think both places have their good and bad points. The countryside is beautiful and peaceful but inconvenient and sometimes boring. The city is convenient and exciting, but sometimes it’s too much and the air isn’t as clean. Which one do you prefer?
