Barbecue

Today I would like to write about barbecues in Japan vs. barbecues in the United States. The reason I would like to talk about this is because August is “National Picnic Month” in the United States. Even though barbecues and picnics are different, both are very popular in the summer.

In the United States, when people have a barbecue, they almost always have it in someone’s backyard. The person who is hosting the barbecue will invite many people over to their home and the barbecue lasts all afternoon and usually into the evening. Most families where I’m from in southern Indiana have a big grill in their backyard. It looks like this:

The person hosting is usually in charge of buying and cooking meat. Meat is not as expensive in the U.S. as it is in Japan. The other people who are coming to the barbecue should bring side dishes, desserts, drinks, and buns. Common food at an American barbecue is: hamburgers, hot dogs, pork chops, potato salad, potato chips, baked beans, deviled eggs, and fruit like watermelon. A backyard barbecue looks like this:

Usually there is a long table where the side dishes, desserts and drinks are lined up. The meat is continuously being cooked by the host. People put their sides on their plate and then go to the grill to choose the kind of meat they want. Then everyone sits around the backyard and eats and talks. Sometimes at night they might play with sparklers also.

In Japan, I think since we are in Tokyo, most people cannot have a barbecue in their backyard. People normally go to a campground to have a barbecue. Home parties are not popular in Japan so it’s not normal to see many people gather at one house.

Also in Japan, the food for barbecues is a little different. It is mainly just meat and vegetables. Things like potato salad and watermelon don’t seem to be so popular. I like barbecues in Japan, but I really miss barbecues in the U.S. during the summer.
