The rainy season

Since it is now officially the rainy season in Japan, I thought I would write about rainy season in my hometown and compare it to Japan. In my hometown, the rainy season begins in April and lasts a month or two. We also have a saying in English, “April showers bring May flowers”, which means that if it rains a lot in April, there will be many pretty flowers blooming in May.

I live in the state of Indiana in the United States. Indiana is known for farming. Many people in my area of southern Indiana are corn and soybean farmers, or they raise cattle. Rain is very important for the economy of southern Indiana. If there is no rain, the corn and beans will not grow well.

The rainy season in my hometown is different from the rainy season in Japan. In Japan, it is very humid during the rainy season. However, in Indiana it doesn’t become humid until around June or July. Because of this, rainy season can be very cold and wet. Since it is cold and wet, my family eats a lot of stews and soups during this season. My favorite stew to eat at this time is called “burgoo”.

Burgoo is a spicy stew that is really popular in the Midwest and South of the United States. The most popular place for burgoo is Kentucky, where I was originally born. Since I live in southern Indiana, it only takes 45 minutes to drive to Kentucky, where my mother’s family lives. During rainy season (and also in the summer), we all gather at my grandmother’s house and have burgoo and cornbread. The ingredients of burgoo are usually some kind of meat (my family always uses mutton), and many vegetables such as lima beans, corn, okra, tomatoes, cabbage and potatoes. I really miss it when I’m in Japan.
