St. Patrick’s Day

Today I thought I would talk about St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday celebrated in Ireland, the US, and other English speaking countries. It is on the 17th of March. It is held on the death date of St. Patrick, who was a saint in Ireland. He is famous for bringing Christianity to Ireland, which used to be a Pagan nation. It also celebrates the Irish culture and heritage in general. The reason it is celebrated in countries other than Ireland is because of immigrants moving to those countries.

There are many descendants of Irish immigrants in certain areas of the US. One of these areas is Boston, which is a city that is famous for its Irish heritage. In Boston, on St. Patrick’s Day they dye the river that runs through the city green. Green is the color that represents Ireland. Many people paint their faces with green and with shamrocks, a plant that is thought to bring good luck in Irish culture. Then they go out at night and drink with friends.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a day that is mainly associated with drinking. Many of the beers in bars and pubs around this holiday are green to celebrate. I have also seen these green beers in Japan! There is a pub chain in Japan called HUB. They have stores all over Japan and Tokyo. Since they are a British pub, they have a special green beer for St. Patrick’s Day. I thought it was interesting that even in Japan, you can see people getting ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

One of the traditions we have in the US is that on St. Patrick’s Day, you must wear green. If you do not wear green people are allowed to pinch you. I don’t like this tradition very much because pinching can hurt. However, it is something that is very popular among children. On St. Patrick’s Day, many children in the US make sure to wear green so they are safe from being pinched.
