Star Wars and Mad Max

Star Wars

Lately, a lot of people are excited about the new Star Wars film. How about you?

I was born in 1981, so my earliest memories of the original Star Wars movies are watching them on television, with commercial breaks, when I was a little kid. I was excited to watch them, and I thought they were wonderful, but it was still only television. On the whole, Star Wars was not a big part of my childhood. I was born a little too late for that.

In 1997, ‘digitally remastered’ versions of the original Star Wars movies were released in cinemas. At first, I was excited about that, but then I heard they weren’t very good, so I never saw them.

Then, starting in 1999, three Star Wars ‘prequel’ films began to be released. I was excited about those, too – but then I heard they were really bad, so I never saw them.

Now, in 2015, there will finally be a sequel to the original Star Wars movies; an ‘Episode 7’ called The Force Awakens. It will have Luke Skywalker and Han Solo and Princess Leia in it. To tell you the truth, it looks like it’ll be a really good film! But even so, I just don’t care. Maybe I’ll go and see it; maybe I won’t. If I do, I hope it’s great – but I don’t feel excited about Star Wars anymore. Only curious.

…and Mad Max

For me, the most exciting film sequel of 2015 was Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth Mad Max film after the original movies in 1979, 1981 and 1985. Yes, the original Mad Max movies were made in about the same period as the original Star Wars movies – and of course, I never saw them when I was a little kid; they’re too violent! Nonetheless, I eventually became a huge Mad Max fan, and not a Star Wars fan. I wonder, why is that?

Maybe it’s because the Mad Max films are cynical, whereas the Star Wars movies are bright and optimistic, and I have a cynical personality too. Maybe it’s because the Mad Max films are Australian, like me! Or maybe the Mad Max films are simply better than the Star Wars films. I certainly think they’re more original.
