Today I would like to talk about the recent news about North Korea. The leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, announced that he would no longer be testing nuclear missiles. This is seen as a big deal for most in the world. Many governments are excited, or at least pleased, with this occurrence. This is a great step for future relations between North Korea and other countries of the world. However, I think there are some things that are being overlooked.
First of all, Kim mentioned that he would stop testing nuclear weapons. He did not say that he would get rid of any. He simply stated that since North Korea's nuclear weapons were fully capable of working, there was no need to keep testing. This may have come about because most countries who have nuclear weapons do not test. The only exceptions to this are India and Pakistan, however they have not tested since 1996. This means that since North Korea had been testing, it showed that they weren't fully capable of a nuclear attack. Kim Jong Un wants to show that North Korea is completely capable of launching a nuclear attack, so now they are no longer testing. I do not think this was a show of peace necessarily. It was more a show of nuclear power. Kim Jong Un is saying to the world that his country is ready and capable of nuclear war should the occasion arise.
The positive side is that Kim stated that he would not actively attack another country unless North Korea was threatened. He also emphasized that North Korea would be implementing a more socialist economy. This has yet to be seen, but hopefully it means that North Koreans will have a bit better living conditions. He also stated that he would try to improve relations with neighboring countries. This is also a good sign. Overall, it is hard to tell where this new information will go. One big event that we have to look forward to is the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. How that meeting goes will strongly affect the future.
