Animal Noises

For today’s blog, I would like to talk about the differences in animal noises between the United States and Japan. This is something that I always thought was very interesting because even though the animals make the same noises, the way we explain the noises in English and Japanese can be very different. Occasionally, the noises we make are similar though. The animals I will be introducing will be: a crow, a rooster, a cat, a mouse, a dog, a horse, a pig, a sheep, a cow, and a frog.

First I will start with a crow. In Japanese, the way to express the sound of a crow is カーカー. This is actually exactly the same in English. The only difference is how we write it. We write the sound as “caw”. However, the pronunciation is basically the same.

The next animal is a rooster. In Japanese, the sound for a rooster is コケコッコー。This is very different from the sound a rooster makes in English. In English we say “cock-a-doodle-doo”.

Cats in Japan and cats in the U.S. are portrayed as making very different sounds. In Japanese, cats say ニャーニャー. In English, cats say “meow”.

Mice in Japanese say チューチュー. I think this is really cute. In English, mice say “squeak squeak”. I don’t think this is close to how a mouse sounds, but “squeak” is also the verb we use to describe when a door moves and makes a high-pitched sound. Maybe the sound seemed similar to people in the past.

A dog in Japanese says ワンワン. In English, there are actually a couple of different ways to express how a dog sounds. We can say “woof woof”, “bow wow”, or even “ruff”.

The next animal is a horse. A horse in Japanese says ヒヒーン. The sound a horse makes in English is “neigh”.

A pig in Japanese says ブーブー. I think this is really cute also. In English, we say “oink oink” for pigs.

Sheep In Japanese say メーメー. This one is also a bit similar in English. In English we say “baa baa”.

Cows in Japanese say モーモー. This one is really close to the English word. We say “moo moo” in English.

The final animal I will introduce is a frog. Frogs in Japanese say ケロケロ. This one is really different from English. The sound frogs make in English is “ribbit ribbit”.

I hope you learned some new animal sounds today. Do you know any interesting differences in animal sounds in Japanese in English? If so, please tell me!
