Smoking policies

Today I would like to write about smoking policies in Japan versus the rest of the world. Many people in Japan smoke, and many restaurants and almost all bars and drinking establishments still allow smoking inside. This is something that has been very difficult for me, because I am allergic to tobacco smoke. I was very surprised the first time I came to Japan and realized that many people smoke inside.

In the U.S., smoking indoors was banned more than 10 years ago. People in the U.S. are very concerned about secondhand smoke. This is the smoke that people near smokers breathe in. Rules have become increasingly strict in the United States to protect children especially from harmful chemicals that are released when people smoke.

When I lived in Korea, they began to outlaw smoking in all public establishments. By the time I left Korea in 2015, it was illegal to smoke inside, even at bars or clubs. I think this was a good decision.

However, in places such as Europe (especially France), I have heard that more people smoke than in Japan. I was really surprised to hear this. Even walking down the street, I was told you cannot escape the smoke.

I think places like Europe and Japan need to change their policies about smoking. Smoking not only hurts you but also those around you. We should take care of others and be careful not to make them sick, in my opinion.

What do you think? Do you think Japan should crack down on its laws? Or do you think everything is fine the way it is?
