Today I would like to talk about social media and how it affects young people today. Recently, there are so many social media sites that everyone uses. The basic ones that most young people in the West have are Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter. These social media sites are playing a big role in the lives of the younger generations.
Many companies use social media such as Instagram to promote their products. If you wear a product from a company, then hashtag (#) it, the company might see your picture. Then they might share your picture on their Instagram, which will have many followers. This means many thousands of people will see your photo. Then some of those people will follow you. Some people have become famous and rich because they got many followers on Instagram. There is a TV show about it. You can watch it on YouTube. It’s called Rich Kids of Instagram. I was really shocked to see that people could make a job of sharing their pictures on SNS.
Because SNS has become so important to many young people, we always worry about what picture we will upload or what we will say on it. We worry about how we look and want to have the perfect picture. Some people can say rude or mean things about us online, so many people want to show their best pictures. It is something that has become a little stressful for some people and also addictive for others. Some people cannot spend one day without social media.
There are also many good things about SNS though. For example, some of the hashtags on Instagram promote positive body image for girls of all shapes, sizes, and colors. It can give confidence to girls who are told they are not beautiful. If they put their picture on Instagram with hashtags, people can see that photo and like it and comment nice things also.
