Lent

Last year in my blog I talked about Easter and some of the traditions for Easter. Today I would like to talk about a Catholic tradition that goes along with Easter. This tradition is only practiced in the Catholic Church. Since I am not Catholic, I have never participated in it but many of my friends have. It is called Lent. Lent is a tradition where you give up something for about six weeks before Easter. The reason is to prepare the person for Easter, which is the day that Jesus came back to life. It is supposed to represent the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting (not eating) in the desert.

For Lent, you are supposed to give up something you enjoy for six weeks to show your commitment to your religion. It is very popular to give up things like chocolates or sweets. On Easter, which is a day of celebration for the Catholic Church, you are able to stop your Lent.

Even though this is a Catholic tradition, many people who are not Catholic try it every year. For these people, Lent is not a religious thing but it is for health or for a challenge. Many people see this as a time where they can try to cut out unhealthy habits as a trial for the future.

Lent always begins on a Wednesday. This is called “Ash Wednesday” because all the Catholics go to church and get a marking in ashes on their forehead. The day before Ash Wednesday is called “Fat Tuesday”. On this day, many people eat lots of things and indulge in what they will be giving up for six weeks. Many offices in America celebrate Fat Tuesday by having potluck dinners, where everyone in the office brings a dish to eat during the day.

Overall, even though I’m not Catholic I think Lent is a very interesting tradition. I think it is very good for your health, physically or mentally. This year, I’m trying to not drink soft drinks for six weeks. I think it is something healthy I can do for at least six weeks. Would you ever try Lent? What would you give up for six weeks?
