Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman

Today I would like to talk about Black History Month. This is something that we have in the U.S. Every February, we celebrate all of the things that African Americans have done for our country. As you may know, there are a lot of problems in the U.S now and in the past dealing with racial relations. That’s why I think this month is very important.

During this time, many schoolchildren in the United States are learning about people such as Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. I chose these two women because they are two of my favorite people I learned about when I was young during Black History Month. I would like to introduce them to you today.

Rosa Parks lived during the time of segregation. This is the time after slavery when white people and black people were separated. There were white schools and black schools, black people had to sit in the back of the bus, and they couldn’t enter many places like restaurants or movie theaters. One day, Rosa Parks was sitting near the front of the bus. A white man told her to move to the back of the bus. She refused to move and was arrested. She became famous all over the U.S for standing up for the rights of African Americans.

Harriet Tubman was a slave who escaped to the North part of the United States, where slavery was illegal. After she got free, she didn’t keep running to Canada like many slaves did. She stayed in the North and helped hundreds of other slaves escape. She was part of the Underground Railroad, a system of houses and other places that helped hide slaves on their way to the North so they could become free.

These two women are very important to U.S history, so I wanted to introduce them to you.
