Chiristmas Treats

Today I would like to write about special food and drinks that we have in the United States around Christmas.

The first drink I want to introduce is apple cider. I really love apple cider. It is a hot apple drink that we only have during the winter in the U.S. Many people put cinnamon into the cider also. When I smell this drink, I always think of Christmas. Another drink that is famous in the U.S during winter is called eggnog. Eggnog can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Eggnog is made of milk or cream, sugar, raw eggs, alcohol, and spices (usually vanilla or nutmeg). This drink is only available in stores from late November-December back home.

Another tradition in some families is to make many kinds of sweets during the Christmas season and give them to neighbors. This is usually done in rural areas. My mother does this every year. She always makes chocolate fudge, peanut butter fudge, peanut butter balls, and divinity. You probably know what chocolate and peanut butter fudge are but I will explain what peanut butter balls and divinity are.

Peanut butter balls are made by mixing peanut butter, butter, and powdered sugar together, rolling them into balls and then putting them in the refrigerator to let them get solid. Then you melt chocolate and dip the balls into the chocolate. Put the chocolate-covered candies on a tray and let them dry. Then keep them in the refrigerator.Divinity is a very sweet treat. I am not sure if many Japanese people would like it because it is one of the sweetest candies I have ever had. It is made with sugar, corn syrup, water, egg whites, vanilla and pecans.

Candy canes are also a very popular treat. We hang many candy canes on the Christmas tree in our house every year. There are many kinds of flavors of candy canes also. These are some of the treats we have during the holidays. If you want to know more about what we eat for Christmas dinner, look at my blog about Thanksgiving food. The food from Thanksgiving and Christmas are usually the same! Are there any traditional Christmas foods in Japan?
