Fashion in Japan versus fashion in the United States

ファッション

Today I would like to talk a little bit about fashion in Japan versus fashion in the United States. Fashion for women in Japan is a lot more girly and feminine than fashion for women in the United States. In the U.S, things such as frills and ribbons are not popular at all among young women. This is because in the west, people think of things that are lacy or girly as childish. These things are more appropriate for young girls. Young adults focus more on being sexy than being cute.

In Japan, I feel it is the opposite. Many people want to show a girly and cute side when they go out. This is because in Japanese culture, cute girls seem to be more popular than sexy girls. This makes it easy for a girl in Japan to dress in frills and ribbons, whereas if you dress like that in the U.S, you will seem childish.

For men, where I’m from in the U.S, there is not much fashion. Many men hunt or fish a lot so they wear a lot of flannel and jeans, along with working boots. This is the “country boy” style. They do not worry about their hair and usually keep it short so they don’t have to style it. In Tokyo, men’s fashion is very interesting. Men care more about their hair and what they wear to university.

I like the variety there is in Japanese fashion also. We have a few different styles of fashion in the U.S, but if you wear certain clothes people will judge you. In Japan, it seems young people are more free to wear clothes they want and don’t need to follow any kind of trend. I like being able to wear lots of skirts and frills and not being seen as childish.

The reason I chose today to talk about fashion is because October 17th is “wear something gaudy” day. Gaudy means 派手 in Japanese. So if you want to really express yourself or try something new, you should try to wear it on October 17th!
