Labor Day

Happy Labor Day

Today I would like to write about Labor Day. Labor Day is a holiday in the U.S and other countries. For each country, the day is different. In the U.S, it is on the first Monday in September. This year it is on September 5th. Labor Day is a holiday that celebrates the working class. Since the holiday is always on a Monday, it creates a three-day weekend for most people in the United States. Many people use this time to have a barbecue (which I talked about in a previous blog).

There are also many parades around Labor Day. The parades are to celebrate workers and their families. Since many families in the U.S are double-income families (this means both spouses work), many parents don’t get to spend a lot of time during the weekdays with their children. The parade gives families a free event to watch and enjoy together as a family. There are also many fireworks displays during the weekend and people who are 21 and over usually have parties with lots of alcohol. This makes driving during Labor Day weekend very dangerous, as there are more drunk drivers during this time.

Labor Day weekend is also the time when many sports seasons start in the United States. Football and car racing are two of the sports that start on Labor Day weekend. There are also a lot of sales during this time, especially for clothes and school supplies. This is because in the U.S, the school year starts in the middle of August or the beginning of September.

In Japan, I think a similar day would be November 23rd. In English, this day is called Japanese Labor Thanksgiving Day. Do you guys do anything to celebrate this day?
