Golden week and summer break

Today I would like to write about golden week and summer break in the U.S. Golden week is a week in the beginning of May where everyone is off from school and work. I thought this was really interesting because it's a long holiday especially for workers. In the U.S., we don't have long holidays for workers. Usually the maximum for public holidays off in a row is two days.

During golden week, many people around Japan travel. Since children and parents have the same days off during golden week, it's the most sensible time to travel. However, since everyone has a vacation and is traveling, the roads and many popular tourist spots are very crowded. This can actually be a little inconvenient. Many of my friends at university plan to go to other cities in Japan for golden week. They are traveling to places like Osaka or Kyoto by night bus.

The night bus is very convenient in Japan I think. We have buses like this in the U.S., but the image for them is not very good. Night buses in Japan are very clean and comfortable compared to buses in America.

In the United States, our school schedule is different. We start the semester in January so we end in May or June. Summer break for university students is usually May through September. It's a really long break so most students go home and work for the summer to save money to pay for tuition, which is very expensive in the U.S.

In the U.S., during summer break there is no homework for middle school and high school students. In Japan, students must study and finish homework during their breaks. I think it must be difficult for students in Japan. However, with golden week coming, I think everyone will have a lot of fun!
