Earth Day

Hello! Today I would like to talk with you about Earth Day and recycling. Earth Day is on April 22nd. On Earth Day, many events are held all over the world to support the protection of the environments we live in. It started in 1970 and has been continuing until the present. One reason I want to talk about Earth Day is because in my home country of the U.S., I don’t think many people care as much about recycling and the environment as people in Japan.

In Japan, everyone recycles. When I go to school, there are always four trash cans to choose from; one for plastic bottles (we don’t say pet bottles in English), one for cans, one for burnable trash, and one for non-burnable trash. At my school in the U.S., there were only trash cans without labels. Everyone threw all the trash away in one trash can. Of course, recycling is an option in the U.S., but many people are too lazy to recycle. They think it is easier to just throw everything away.

This is something I really admire about Japan. Most people in Japan are really concerned about saving electricity and recycling. There are many rules in big companies and schools about turning on the air conditioner. It must be twenty eight degrees before you can turn on the air. This is to conserve energy. In the U.S., if it is just a little hot many people turn the air on. They also turn it on very high in the summer, so most public places are freezing in the summer.

This is why Earth Day is so important. We should all try our best to conserve energy and recycle so that we can live in a beautiful world.
